Ministry of Human Rights and IKN Authority Explore Human Rights-Based City Concept

The Ministry of Human Rights and the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Authority are exploring the integration of human rights principles into the development of IKN in East Kalimantan. Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto Sipin stated that strengthening a human rights perspective can be adopted in the construction of Indonesia’s new capital city. “Strengthening the human rights perspective can be adopted in the development of Indonesia’s new capital city,” Mugiyanto said in Sepaku, North Penajam Paser Regency, on Wednesday. Coordination and synergy between the Ministry of Human Rights and the IKN Authority are being pursued to support development that is inclusive and oriented towards community welfare. The integration of human rights principles encompasses the fulfilment of community rights, worker welfare, access to basic services, and the equitable distribution of development benefits for residents around IKN. The concept of a human rights-based city is considered to be in line with IKN’s vision as a World City for All. Head of the IKN Authority Basuki Hadimuljono said the Ministry of Human Rights’ input regarding strengthening the human rights perspective in IKN development is interesting to study further. “Input from the Ministry of Human Rights related to strengthening the human rights perspective in IKN development is interesting to study further and could become one of the reinforcements for IKN,” Basuki said. The IKN Authority is open to collaboration with the Ministry of Human Rights in formulating human rights strengthening programmes that can be integrated into the governance of the new capital’s development. Basuki stated that the IKN Authority will continue to strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of Human Rights so that IKN development proceeds inclusively, sustainably, and provides benefits for all levels of society.
