Ministry of Housing to Renovate Eleven Uninhabitable Homes in Matraman

The Ministry of Housing and Settlements (PKP) is set to renovate eleven uninhabitable houses in Palmeriam Village, Matraman District, East Jakarta. Minister Maruarar Sirait, during an inspection of the Self-Help Housing Stimulus Assistance (BSPS) programme on Friday, noted the stark inequality in the area, where residents live in highly concerning conditions with monthly incomes of only one million rupiah. The renovation work is scheduled to begin on 24 June and is targeted for completion by 24 August 2026. Residents will be provided with a subsidy to rent alternative accommodation for two months while the renovations are carried out. Maruarar stated that the provision of housing repair assistance is based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), which identified the eleven Palmeriam homes as requiring intervention to become habitable again. He emphasised that state intervention is essential to address poverty, ensure decent housing, and reduce inequality. The government is intensifying efforts to reduce the number of uninhabitable homes by accelerating the Self-Help Housing Stimulus programme, with a national target of 400,000 units by 2026. Maruarar highlighted the significant increase in scale, noting that in Jakarta alone the number of homes being addressed has surged from 158 units last year to 10,000 units this year. He stressed that achieving this acceleration requires support from various parties, including local governments and relevant agencies.
