Ministry of Housing and Settlements and UI to Build Student Housing, Preparing 4,000 Rooms
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) together with Universitas Indonesia (UI) will build student housing within the campus environment.
Minister PKP Maruarar Sirait met with UI Rector Heri Hermansyah at the UI student dormitory in Depok, West Java, on Thursday (30/04/2026) to discuss the plan.
UI Rector Heri Hermansyah said one of the plans being prepared is the construction of International Student Housing in the area around Pondok Cina Station.
The housing is designed to have a capacity of up to 4,000 rooms on a 1.7-hectare plot of land. In addition, UI also plans to develop student dormitories through the construction of multi-storey housing towers.
Currently, UI has around 1,700 dormitory rooms with prices ranging from Rp 500,000 to Rp 2 million per month, depending on facilities and room size.
In the future, the development of housing is expected to reach more students while still considering comfort, accessibility, and the diversity of residents’ needs.
In response to the plan, Minister PKP Maruarar Sirait emphasised the importance of building housing that starts from the needs of the users.
“We must start by listening to prospective residents, see their wants and abilities first, then design and build. We also need to look at regulations, those that hinder must be reviewed and improved,” said the Gerindra Party politician.
She also encouraged the development of housing in the campus environment not only for students, but also to accommodate lecturers and educational staff, and equipped with supporting facilities.
In addition, the government is opening up space for student involvement in the policy formulation process.
“Students also need to be involved. They are the ones who will live here, so we must listen to them,” she said.
The Ministry of PKP is asking for UI’s assistance in studying the development of subsidised flats (rusun) in urban areas.
Collaboration with UI will also include evaluation and preparation of data-based field policy recommendations.
Maruarar even opened the opportunity for regular online meetings with UI’s academic team and field technical personnel.
“We need sharp input from UI, including sampling surveys so that the policies taken are truly based on real conditions in society,” she revealed at her office in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/10/2025).
