Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas to Renovate 8,000 TB Patients' Homes This Year

A total of 8,000 TB patients will be provided with new homes. The construction of homes for TB patients will be carried out this year, including in West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB).

The Minister of Housing and Settlements Areas (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, said the construction of homes for TB patients has been coordinated with the Health Ministry. From this coordination, around 8,000 TB patients’ homes will be built this year.

“We, together with the Health Ministry, support our TB-affected compatriots to become healthier. We will bedah rumah (home renovations); the target is 8,000 homes,” the minister, known as Ara, said when he was met in Senggigi, West Lombok Regency, on Monday (19 May 2026).

For the bedah rumah programme, Ara said the target this year is 400 homes. This figure represents a significant increase from 2025, which only reached 45 thousand homes.

“This is a very large increase. In collaboration with the Minister of Home Affairs, who is also the Head of the Border Management Agency, 15,000 will be built in cross-border areas,” he said.

Thus, according to Ara, some houses in border areas between Papua and Papua New Guinea, West Kalimantan with Malaysia, North Sulawesi with the Philippines and the Riau Islands and Aceh with Malaysia are not fit for use.

“In those areas, our people’s houses will be renovated, repaired, bedah rumah (home renovations) so that they are fit for use. This is proof of the state’s presence in border areas,” Ara asserted.

NTB Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal said the number of extremely poor people in NTB remains at 2 percent. The majority of NTB’s people in the extreme poverty category are heavily affected by substandard housing.

“We thank the Minister for increasing the number of recipients of the bedah rumah programme. This also helps us tackle the problem of extreme poverty in Bumi Gora,” Iqbal said.

Iqbal added that the Ministry of Home Affairs also continually assists the NTB provincial government in seeking creative financing options through various schemes for building homes for residents who lack adequate housing.

“Even though central transfers to regions have fallen, through various creative financing proposals we’ve put to the Ministry of Home Affairs and with support, we can fund development in the region all this time,” he said.
