Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Boosts Educational Relevance Through Micro-credentials

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) is utilising micro-credentials as a vital instrument to strengthen the relevance of higher education within the dynamics of the working world.

Beny Bandanadjaja, Director of Learning and Students (Belmawa) at Kemdiktisaintek, assessed that in addition to diplomas and academic qualifications, micro-credentials have become highly significant. “In this context, micro-credentials serve as an important instrument to reinforce the relevance of higher education,” he stated during the Socialisation of the Micro-credential Guidelines in Jakarta on Thursday.

Consequently, Beny is encouraging universities to continuously innovate by providing a learning ecosystem that is increasingly flexible, adaptive, and responsive to rapid global developments. Through the micro-credential scheme, students are given the freedom to undertake more concise learning units focused on mastering specific competencies.

To support this transformative step, Kemdiktisaintek has formulated the ‘Guidebook for the Implementation of Micro-credentials in Higher Education’ as a standardised primary reference. This guidebook has been designed to align the perceptions of all campus leaders regarding governance, quality assurance, and appropriate reporting mechanisms.

“Thus, micro-credentials are not viewed merely as a form of short-term learning, but as part of a higher education ecosystem that maintains quality standards, clear learning outcomes, and strong relevance to the needs of the professional world,” he said.

In addition to improving managerial aspects, Beny also urged universities to strengthen collaborations with the business sector, industry, and professional associations when designing learning outcomes. Through solid synergy between academic theory on campus and real-world field requirements, Kemdiktisaintek is optimistic that superior and competent human resources can be created to welcome ‘Indonesia Emas 2045’.

“Micro-credentials are one of the efforts to realise higher education that is flexible, relevant, high-quality, and impactful,” concluded Beny Bandanadjaja.
