Jakarta - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) and the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) have strengthened their synergy in preventing and addressing sexual violence within higher education institutions on Friday, 27 February.

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto welcomed the strategic initiative from Komnas Perempuan as an effort to create safe environments in higher education institutions and expressed openness to collaboration.

Minister Brian noted that the parties also discussed the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that had previously been in effect, as well as strengthening collaboration adapted to the latest regulatory developments, particularly following the enactment of the Sexual Violence Crime Law (UU TPKS).

Monitoring data indicates that numerous higher education institutions have received and handled reports in significant numbers, which is seen as an indication of increasing confidence in campus reporting mechanisms.

Meanwhile, Komnas Perempuan Chairwoman Maria Ulfah Anshor emphasised the importance of refining indicators for violence-free campuses through strengthening the capacity of the Task Force for Prevention and Handling of Violence in Higher Education Institutions (Satgas PPKPT).

“There may also be some changes, including new regulations,” said Maria.

The Komnas Perempuan chairwoman also highlighted implementation challenges in the field, including the need to harmonise campus administrative mechanisms with criminal legal processes, and the importance of preventing re-victimisation.

Through this meeting, Kemdiktisaintek and Komnas Perempuan committed to delivering higher education governance that is increasingly responsive, accountable, and victim-centred, in line with the mandate of the Sexual Violence Crime Law.
