Ministry of Hajj and Umrah Receives 15-20 Hajj and Umrah Fraud Reports Daily

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (Kemenhaj) has revealed that it receives 15 to 20 reports related to hajj and umrah fraud every day. These reports encompass various cases, such as fraud in regular hajj, special hajj, with umrah being the most dominant. “No fewer than 20 cases are reported to the Ministry of Hajj every day; this requires serious and swift handling to create a deterrent effect,” stated Harun Al Rasyid, Director General of Hajj and Umrah Management Control at Kemenhaj, during a press conference at National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Monday (20/4/2026). “We cannot handle this alone, which is why we greatly need full support from our colleagues in the Police so that in the future, efforts to prevent and crack down on criminal acts in the organisation of hajj and umrah can be enforced,” Harun explained. The Hajj Task Force, involving various ministries and institutions, has been working since 14 April 2026. These cases are still under investigation to trace the involved parties, including the possible involvement of travel agents. The National Police assure that they will take action against all involved parties, whether organisers, intermediaries, or other responsible entities. “The main focus of the National Police in the Hajj Task Force is to eradicate illegal hajj,” said Inspector General of Police Johnny Eddizon Isir, Head of the National Police’s Public Relations Division, in his statement on Wednesday (15/4/2026). In addition to eradicating illegal hajj, the National Police are also tasked with protecting prospective pilgrims from rogue travel agencies that promise hajj departures without queuing. “Protecting pilgrims from fraud, ensuring security and order, and uncovering networks of rogue travel agencies,” said Isir. “The role of the National Police in the Hajj Task Force is very strategic, covering prevention, operational security, to law enforcement against various violations,” said Isir.
