Wamena (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut), through the Papua Natural Resources Conservation Centre (BBKSDA), is promoting five key programmes across Indonesia to preserve forest ecosystems nationwide, particularly in the Papua Pegunungan region.

The Head of BBKSDA Papua, Johny Santoso, stated in Wamena on Wednesday that Indonesia’s Fulo Net Sink 2030 represents a national commitment to position the forestry and land use sector as a net sink for carbon emissions by 2030.

“Indonesia’s Fulo Net Sink 2030 features five priority programmes, including sustainable forest management, enhancement of carbon stocks, conservation of biodiversity, restoration of peat ecosystems, and enforcement of laws alongside strengthening institutional capacity,” he said.

The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry held a sub-national socialisation for Indonesia’s Fulo Net Sink 2030 in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Pegunungan, over two days on 21-22 April 2026.

He expressed hope that through this socialisation, Papua Pegunungan—with its abundant forests, natural resources, and high biodiversity—would play a strategic role in supporting the achievement of targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

He explained that the purpose of the socialisation event is to increase the understanding of local stakeholders regarding the sub-national policy of Indonesia’s Fulo Net Sink 2030, to convey strategic policy directions, and to outline the role of the region in supporting the achievement of Indonesia’s Fulo Net Sink 2030.

“In essence, this event is being held to encourage synergy and collaboration between the central government, local authorities, indigenous communities, and other stakeholders in Papua Pegunungan,” he said.

He added that the speakers at the sub-national Indonesia’s Fulo Net Sink 2030 event are representatives from high-ranking officials at the mid-level and primary levels within the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.

“Of course, the targets to be achieved are to enhance the understanding of stakeholders in Papua Pegunungan regarding Indonesia’s Fulo Net Sink 2030, as well as to verify initial data and information needed to support the greenhouse gas emission reduction programme in the forestry sector in Papua Pegunungan,” he stated.
