Ministry of Forestry Expands Carbon Trading to Social Forestry Schemes
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Forestry is expanding carbon trading opportunities for the public, which can now be conducted not only in concession areas but also through social forestry schemes.
Carbon trading is no longer limited to Business Utilisation Forest Permits (PBPH) or concessions, but is also being implemented in conservation areas, such as Way Kambas National Park, and within social forestry schemes. All these policies are directed at improving community welfare, said Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni during the inauguration of the Indonesia Forest Carbon Hub in Jakarta on Monday.
Minister Raja Juli stated that the expansion of carbon trading is part of efforts to realise the goal of building an inclusive and sustainable carbon trading ecosystem. As an important milestone, the Carbon Unit Registration System (SRUK) will be launched on 9 July 2026, the result of cooperation and hard work from various parties, especially the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and related ministries in the environmental sector.
The Minister also launched three PBPH projects and one Social Forestry project as a symbol that the development of carbon trading is not only in favour of large business players but also provides space for communities through the social forestry scheme. The Ministry of Forestry expressed gratitude and appreciation to all the younger generation who support the development of carbon trading, noting that today marks an important momentum as carbon trading projects are ready to be implemented.
The Indonesia Forest Carbon Hub is expected to become an integral part of building a credible carbon trading ecosystem. A carbon trading system with integrity can only be realised through collaboration with various stakeholders, the Minister said. On the demand side, the government has established cooperation with the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), an organisation comprising dozens of major global companies, which is expected to support Indonesia in becoming a global carbon trading hub.
