Ministry of Foreign Affairs repatriates six Indonesians from stalled Global Sumud Land Convoy in Libya

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) RI facilitated the return of six out of seven Indonesian volunteers participating in the Global Sumud Land Convoy (GSLC), with one remaining in Istanbul and scheduled to return home in the coming days. The six volunteers arrived in Jakarta on Friday, 29 May 2026, at 17:35 WIB. The humanitarian mission for Palestine was organised by Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) via sea and land routes, with the GSLC volunteers travelling through Libya-Egypt-Gaza alongside international volunteers, including seven Indonesians.

A Kemlu press statement on 29 May stated: ‘From the outset, Kemlu RI and relevant Indonesian missions, including the KBRI Tripoli, have closely coordinated with various parties to monitor and ensure their safety.’ The convoy failed to secure transit permits in Sirte, the border region between western and eastern Libya, halting their journey to Gaza.

On 25-26 May, the KBRI Tripoli collected all seven Indonesian volunteers and transported them to the Libyan capital, where they were accommodated at the KBRI residence while awaiting repatriation. The volunteers expressed gratitude for Kemlu and Indonesian mission support.

The Indonesian government reiterated that citizen protection is a top priority while acknowledging the public’s humanitarian efforts. However, Kemlu warned of high security risks in conflict zones, advising potential volunteers to carefully consider safety and channel aid through accredited organisations with local networks.
