Ministry of Environment urges Papua regional governments to accelerate climate change policy implementation

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has urged regional governments in Papua to accelerate the implementation of climate change control policies and the utilisation of Carbon Economic Value (NEK).

In a statement issued from Jakarta on Tuesday, the Director of Climate Change Control Resource Mobilisation at KLH/BPLH, Irawan Asaad, affirmed that the success of climate change control depends heavily on the active involvement of regional governments as the primary implementers on the ground.

“The success of this policy is largely determined by the active role of regional governments. This is where the importance of the Regional Environmental Control Centre and regional apparatus comes in as the main drivers in the field,” said Irawan Asaad.

He emphasised Papua’s important role in achieving national emission reduction targets, given its extensive forest areas, mangrove and coastal ecosystems that function as natural carbon sinks, and its rich biodiversity.

In this regard, the Papua Environmental Control Centre, together with all regional apparatus organisations, is expected not only to act as technical implementers but also to serve as a bridge between national policy and the implementation of climate action in the regions.

“The Papua Environmental Control Centre, together with all regional apparatus organisations, plays a role not only as a technical implementer, but also as the engine of coordination, a facilitator of low-carbon development, a learning centre, and at the same time a bridge between national policy direction and real implementation on the ground,” said Irawan Asaad.

KLH organised a Dissemination of Climate Change Control Policy and Carbon Economic Value (NEK) event for stakeholders in the Papua region, held in Sorong on 8-9 July 2026.
