The Ministry of Defence (Kemenhan) has proposed an additional budget for the year 2027, raising it to Rp334 trillion to support operational readiness, the modernisation of primary weaponry systems (alutsista), defence force building, and other priority programmes. Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin stated that the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) and the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) had set an indicative ceiling for Kemenhan in 2027 at Rp139 trillion. However, he has proposed an additional Rp195 trillion to bring the total to Rp334 trillion. He noted that the actual required budget (renbut) for Kemenhan in 2027 is Rp667 trillion, making the proposed increase an attempt to narrow the gap. “What was approved based on the letter from Bappenas and the Ministry of Finance is only Rp139 trillion, so the difference is significant. Therefore, we are proposing an additional amount to get closer to the maximum requirement of Rp667 trillion,” he said following a working meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Wednesday. The minister emphasised that the budget increase carries substantial meaning for state sovereignty, describing the national defence system as a “safety belt” for national development. In 2027, the Ministry of Defence has 20 work lists divided into six programmes, including tasks related to managing conflict dynamics in Papua and other regions. The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) must also support the government in building necessary facilities and infrastructure, such as constructing bridges following the aftermath of natural disasters. Commission I Chairman Utut Adianto previously noted that the 2027 indicative ceiling of Rp139 trillion represented a decrease from the approved 2026 budget of Rp187 trillion. After conducting simulations to maintain the acceleration and strength of the TNI in safeguarding the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), the ministry felt an addition was necessary.
