The Ministry of Defence has confirmed reports that two participants of the Sarjana Penggerak Pembangunan Indonesia (SPPI) programme for the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih and Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih died whilst undergoing basic military training. The confirmation came after news of the deaths of trainees Anisa Muyassaroh and Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq spread on social media on Monday (22/6).

Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, Head of the Defence Information Bureau at the Ministry of Defence’s Secretariat General, stated that participant Anisa Muyassaroh, who was training at the Dodikjur Rindam VI/Mulawarman education unit in Balikpapan, experienced health problems on 18 June 2026. She received medical treatment at the unit’s health facility before being referred to hospital. Following a medical examination, Anisa was pronounced dead due to heat stroke.

Meanwhile, Yonanda died whilst attending training at the Puslatpur Kodiklatad education unit in Baturaja. Rico explained that Yonanda experienced a decline in physical condition on Monday (15/6) and was referred to hospital. Based on medical reports, he was pronounced dead due to cardiac arrest.

Rico stressed that Yonanda, Anisa, and all participants had undergone a health screening process before being declared fit to attend the basic military training. All participants also underwent training material that the TNI had ensured was safe for civilians to undertake. Despite this assurance, the Ministry of Defence confirmed it will still evaluate the training to ensure participants can complete the material safely and comfortably in the future. Regarding Anisa and Yonanda, he assured that the ministry will give full attention to their families. The Ministry of Defence together with the TNI has provided assistance to the families of both participants and ensured that all handling processes are carried out in accordance with applicable procedures.
