Ministry of Culture Collaborates with Belgian Embassy to Realise Repatriation of Cultural Artefacts
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Culture is collaborating with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Belgium, concurrently to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the European Union, in efforts to repatriate cultural artefacts.
Culture Minister Fadli Zon, through a statement confirmed from Jakarta on Monday, hopes that the MoU related to these efforts can be promptly drafted and constructive.
“Repatriation is a strategic priority programme because it concerns the historical values and national identity,” said Fadli.
He emphasised the importance of deepening the provenance aspect through historical studies of the collections, so that the return process becomes part of efforts for historical justice.
He also expressed appreciation for the active role of Ambassador Andy in supporting Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy agenda.
“We are pleased that Mr Andy is there; the Ambassador also understands culture,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Belgium, concurrently to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the European Union, Andy Rachmianto, stated that communication with the Belgian Government has been established.
The next steps involve strengthening coordination and exploring more concrete follow-ups.
The Indonesian Government is actively conducting an inventory of cultural collections located abroad and opening opportunities for research funding through the cultural funding scheme Dana Indonesiaraya to support these efforts.
In addition, the meeting highlighted the strengthening of cooperation between Indonesia and the European Union, including in the context of commemorating the 50th anniversary of ASEAN–EU relations, which will be marked through a high-level forum in Singapore in 2027.
The Ministry of Culture reaffirms its commitment to continue strengthening cultural diplomacy as a strategic instrument in expanding international cooperation.
These efforts are also directed towards ensuring the preservation and restoration of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, including through accelerating repatriation with several friendly countries.
