Jakarta (ANTARA) - Director of Digital Infrastructure Acceleration at the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi), Mulyadi, has revealed the government’s strategy to grow digital infrastructure until 2029 to support the success of the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029. Fibre optic deployment and promoting the adoption of open access principles are strategies that Kemkomdigi will implement to achieve the target of growing digital infrastructure to support government programmes. “The first priority is fibre optic deployment. This is important because fibre optic networks are key to sustainable services, both fixed broadband and mobile broadband, especially for 5G backhaul,” said Mulyadi at a discussion event organised by APJATEL (Association of Telecommunications Network Providers) in South Jakarta on Thursday. Not only increasing penetration, fibre optic deployment is also expected to increase the speed of fixed broadband connectivity in 2029 to 100 Mbps from the 2025 condition of 32.1 Mbps. Next, the second strategy implemented is differentiation, which involves organising passive and active digital infrastructure. The infrastructure in question includes organising Integrated Utility Network Facilities (SJUT), shared poles, and other supporting infrastructure. Mulyadi said that the involvement of APJATEL, which represents telecommunications service providers, in managing shared infrastructure can provide transparency in management costs and support healthier industry competition. Kemkomdigi and related ministries are currently working to harmonise regulations at the regional level to ensure that digital infrastructure organisation at the regional government level aligns with the national digital infrastructure development mission. Finally, regarding the open access principle for digital infrastructure, its implementation is expected to open wider access for telecommunications providers to deliver connectivity to more communities. “We are also promoting the open access principle. By encouraging fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory access to passive infrastructure. This is crucial to reduce costs and increase competition,” said Mulyadi. The open access principle on digital infrastructure refers to a telecommunications system that separates physical network access and service providers. Thus, more service providers can utilise digital infrastructure to deliver telecommunications to more regions in Indonesia.
