Jakarta — The Indonesian government is preparing a Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a national governance framework that encourages innovation whilst ensuring technology development is conducted ethically, transparently, and accountably.

The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communication and Digital, Ismail, stated that the regulation represents a strategic step for Indonesia to build a responsible and trustworthy AI ecosystem.

“Going forward, Indonesia plans to introduce a Presidential Regulation on Artificial Intelligence. This regulation will provide a clear governance framework to encourage the development of ethical, transparent, and accountable AI, whilst ensuring innovation can continue to grow in a trusted environment,” Ismail said in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to Ismail, AI opens significant opportunities to accelerate inclusive digital transformation, boost economic growth, and improve the quality of public services for citizens.

However, the development of this technology also presents new challenges such as misinformation and deepfakes, potential bias and discrimination, and risks to data privacy and cyber security. Therefore, Indonesia believes that AI governance must be built through an approach that balances innovation and risk management.

“For Indonesia, artificial intelligence is not only about technological advancement, but how this innovation delivers tangible benefits to society and improves human quality of life,” said Ismail.

The Indonesian government is currently finalising the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap, which will serve as a strategic guide for developing an inclusive, responsible, and competitive national AI ecosystem.

“Building trust in AI requires strong commitment to transparency and accountability, robust data and privacy protection, and effective risk management in the use of AI technology,” he explained.

“Artificial intelligence will shape our society’s future. Our shared responsibility is to ensure that future is safe, inclusive, and beneficial to all,” said Ismail.
