Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has issued a second summons to Meta and Google as both have yet to fulfil the first summons to undergo examination regarding compliance with child protection regulations in the digital realm. “Today, we have issued the second summons letter to the relevant parties. In accordance with the provisions, summons can be issued up to a maximum of three times before sanctions are imposed,” said the Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Kemkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, in a press statement in Jakarta on Thursday. The summons to Meta, owner of the Threads, Instagram, and Facebook platforms, and Google, owner of YouTube, is part of the enforcement of Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operators in Child Protection (PP Tunas). Kemkomdigi is summoning representatives from Meta and Google because it assesses that the digital platforms owned by these two tech giants have not yet met the provisions in PP Tunas. Alexander stated that Meta and Google responded to the first summons letter from the government by requesting a postponement due to the need for internal coordination. “We have received the request for rescheduling, so the obligation to fulfil the examination summons has not yet been carried out,” he said. Kemkomdigi then issued the second summons letter as a follow-up step in the process of enforcing regulations on child protection in the digital space. “Every delay extends the risks faced by children in the digital space. Therefore, we demand concrete and timely compliance from all platforms, including global platforms,” said Alexander. Kemkomdigi continues to conduct supervision and prepare further steps if non-compliance by digital platform providers with PP Tunas persists. “This summons is part of the process. If the obligations are not fulfilled, the enforcement mechanism will proceed in accordance with applicable provisions,” said Alexander. He stated that every violation will be addressed in accordance with the applicable provisions and legislation. According to Minister of Communication and Digital Regulation No. 9 of 2026, platform providers that do not comply with the rules may face administrative sanctions in the form of warnings, temporary access suspension, up to access termination. “We hope for good faith and concrete actions from every electronic system operator. A digital space that is safe for children is a shared responsibility, and compliance with regulations is part of that commitment,” thus Alexander Sabar.
