Ministry of Communication and Digital Enhances Oversight of Platforms Accessible to Children

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is enhancing oversight of digital platforms that remain accessible to children despite having established minimum age limits for users. During a discussion event in Central Jakarta on Monday, Mediodecci Lustarini, Secretary of the Directorate General of Digital Space Supervision at Kemkomdigi, highlighted digital platforms intended for users aged 18 and above that are still accessible to children. “Some have set the user age above 18, but in reality, users can still access them even if they are under 18,” she said. She explained that the government is mapping applications that formally set user age limits but lack adequate age verification mechanisms. According to her, digital platforms that set a minimum user age, such as 18 or 21 years, are required to implement effective verification systems to prevent children from accessing their services. “This is currently in the resolution stage for us, identifying which applications have set age limits but still allow children to enter,” said Mediodecci. Mediodecci stated that the designation of eight digital platforms as initial targets for implementing the regulation was based on the large number of users in Indonesia. However, she emphasised that the scope of the PP Tunas regulation covers all Electronic System Operators (PSE), both public and private. “So all PSE are covered without exception. We have not set any exemptions,” said Mediodecci. The regulation for private PSE covers six categories of services, including search engines, e-commerce, digital financial services, banking, and services that manage personal data on a large scale. Every platform designed specifically for children or potentially accessible by children is required to conduct an independent risk assessment to ensure that the products, features, and services provided comply with the provisions in PP Tunas.
