Ministry of Communication and Digital Condemns Inaccurate Game Rating Practices on Steam
The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemenkomdigi) states that the display of Indonesian Game Rating System (IGRS) ratings on several games on the Steam platform is not the result of official Indonesian government classification. Kemenkomdigi also condemns the practice of conveying inaccurate classification information. This is because it can directly impact public protection in the digital space. Director of Digital Ecosystem Development at Kemenkomdigi, Sonny Hendra Sudaryana, stated that monitoring results show the ratings displayed on the platform are still from an internal mechanism based on self-declaration. According to him, those ratings have not gone through the official verification process as per Indonesian regulations. “The circulating ratings are not the result of official IGRS classification. This has the potential to cause public misunderstanding, especially regarding the age suitability of a game,” said Sonny in Central Jakarta on Sunday (5/4/2026). He mentioned that Kemenkomdigi found indications of the use of IGRS labels on the platform carried out through internal mechanisms without official verification. “Thus, it does not reflect valid classification results,” Sonny stated. Kemenkomdigi, he added, emphasises that every digital business actor has an obligation to convey accurate, clear, and non-misleading information, as well as to ensure user protection. These obligations are regulated in various regulations.
