Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education Reveals 7,387 Teachers in NTT Have Not Yet Participated in PPG

Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Nunuk Suryani, has revealed that 7,387 teachers in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) have not yet participated in Pendidikan Profesi Guru (PPG). These thousands of teachers are distributed across levels from kindergarten to SMA/SMK. “According to 2025 data, there are 7,387 teachers in NTT who have not participated in PPG,” Nunuk stated in her speech at the Coordination Meeting on the Implementation of Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education Programmes in Kupang, NTT, on Monday (4/5/2026). “We urge every local government in the cities and regencies of NTT to encourage teachers to participate in PPG,” she added. PPG is a training programme for prospective teachers or active teachers to acquire professional competencies. According to Nunuk, many teachers still do not meet the academic qualifications as stipulated in Law Number 14 of 2005 on Teachers and Lecturers. “Therefore, this has become a serious concern for the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education through the S1 academic qualification programme,” Nunuk said. Based on the Basic Education Data (Dapodik) from December 2024 to 2025, there are 174,520 teachers nationwide who do not yet hold S1 or D4 qualifications. The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education targets all these teachers to complete their S1 by 2029. “Then by 2030, they can obtain educator certification to achieve welfare,” Nunuk explained. On that occasion, Nunuk also mentioned that the total number of schools in NTT currently stands at 5,837. Of this number, 4,249 schools already have active principals, while the rest do not. “In 2025, there are 203 school principals who have retired. Thus, the total need for school principals in NTT reaches 1,211 people,” she added.
