Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education Prepares Redistribution to Address Shortage of 498,000 Teachers

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) is preparing a mapping related to the national redistribution of teachers to fulfil the shortage of 498,000 teacher positions.

The Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel (Dirjen GTK) of Kemendikdasmen, Nunuk Suryani, stated that currently, there are still schools with an excess number of teachers, while many other schools are experiencing a shortage of teachers.

“The first step taken is the directive from Mrs Menpan-RB during the previous coordination meeting, so redistribution first. Based on our data, we need 498,000 teachers. However, this must be redistributed first, as per the directive from Mrs Menpan-RB,” said Nunuk in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

Therefore, her side is now preparing a mapping related to the redistribution of teachers to rearrange the even distribution of teachers nationwide before eventually opening recruitment to absorb the non-ASN teachers who are already recorded in Dapodik as of 31 December 2024.

“Because we are finalising the formulation of fulfilling teacher needs for this year. Mrs Rini from Menpan-RB stated that there will be recruitment or formation, but the number has not yet been determined. We are still calculating the redistribution first, then calculating the needs,” said Nunuk.

Regarding the selection for non-ASN teachers, she said that her side is preparing a fair selection to provide legal certainty and career progression for 237,196 honorary or non-civil servant apparatus (non-ASN) teachers who have been recorded in the Dapodik system as of 31 December 2024.

Kemendikdasmen, she added, together with relevant ministries and institutions, is also discussing the selection mechanism for hundreds of thousands of these non-ASN teachers who are already in the Dapodik system.

This is because the determination of the selection mechanism up to the appointment of these non-ASN teachers is not the policy domain of Kemendikdasmen, but rather Menpan-RB.

“So we are still calculating the redistribution first, then calculating the needs. Later, the formation will be determined. The mechanism will also be determined because the one that sets the ASN selection mechanism is in another ministry, not Kemendikdasmen,” said Nunuk.
