Sidoarjo, East Java (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) is enhancing the English language competency of 13,964 primary school (SD) teachers to prepare for the implementation of English as a compulsory subject at the primary school level starting from the 2027/2028 academic year. Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu’ti stated that in 2026, the ministry had conducted in-depth English teaching training for 5,777 primary school teachers across various parts of Indonesia. “This competency enhancement is the government’s effort in the preparation process for implementing the related subject on a compulsory basis starting in 2027 for students from grade 3 of primary school,” said Mu’ti in Sidoarjo, East Java, on Tuesday. According to him, this aligns with efforts to improve teachers’ qualifications, competencies, and welfare, which is a focus of the government in national education reform. The programme includes allocation of training for teachers in more than 11,400 educational units, some of which have undergone verification and validation processes, and are now entering the stage of signing cooperation agreements (PKS). “We have already allocated for more than 11,400 educational units. Some have been verified and validated, and are now in the process of signing cooperation agreements so that the programme can run as soon as possible,” said Abdul Mu’ti.
