Ministry of Agriculture Declares Indonesia Self-Sufficient in Sheep and Goat Meat

The Ministry of Agriculture has revealed that Indonesia has now achieved self-sufficiency in sheep and goats. Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry, Agung Suganda, asserted that this is reflected in the import figures for sheep and goat meat, which are currently recorded at below 10%.

“Currently, we can declare that Indonesia is self-sufficient in sheep and goat meat. Why? Because our imports are already below 10% of the national requirement, and we are even continuing to reduce them,” Agung said at the Indo Livestock Expo & Forum at NICE PIK 2, Tangerang Regency, Banten, on Tuesday (16/6).

Nevertheless, Agung acknowledged that during the first six months of 2026, the government is still permitting imports of premium quality (premium chill) sheep and goat meat, with volumes remaining under 10% of national demand.

“So, in addition to being self-sufficient in chicken meat and eggs, Indonesia is now also self-sufficient in sheep and goats. We are currently pushing for exports, and you will later witness how our entrepreneurs in Indonesia have implemented butchering systems so that any type of sheep or goat meat can be produced domestically,” Agung explained.

It is known that the current national sheep population stands at approximately 9.15 million heads, while the national goat population is recorded at around 15 million heads.

Furthermore, Agung added, the government has already used domestically sourced sheep and goat meat for the needs of the Indonesian Hajj pilgrimage some time ago.

“Because our sheep and goat population is quite abundant, even now the prices are relatively cheap compared to conditions several years ago,” he concluded.
