Ministry gets new structure

JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto has issued a presidential
decree ruling that the newly-merged Ministry of Industry and
Trade is to be streamlined into 10 first-echelon departments
under the leadership of Minister Tunky Ariwibowo.

According to the decree, issued here on Wednesday, the 10 top
echelon departments consist of five directorate generals, three
agencies, one secretariat general and one inspectorate general.

The directorate generals are in charge respectively of
agricultural and forestry industry; light industry; metal,
machinery and chemical industry; domestic trade; and
international trade.

The three agencies consist of the Small Industry Development
Board, the National Agency for Export Development and the
Industry and Trade Development and Research Agency.

The secretariat general has seven bureaus and the inspectorate
general has five provincial inspectorates.

Previously, before the merger, the ministry of industry had
eight first echelon departments and the trade ministry seven
first echelon departments.

No details were immediately available as to who will be
appointed to head the various departments and agencies but
reliable sources at the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that
the senior officials will be sworn in early next week.

Minister Tunky acknowledged last week that he had proposed
three candidates for each of the top echelons to Vice President
Try Sutrisno, the chairman of the board of assessment for high
officials. (13)
