Ministry Blocks 3.7 Million Online Gambling Contents Since October 2024

Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) has recorded cutting off access to 3.7 million sites and content related to online gambling activities from 20 October 2024 to 12 July 2026. “We report that from 20 October 2024 to 12 July 2026, Komdigi has taken down 3.7 million sites and content,” said Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid at the OJK Banking Forum 2026 at the Bank Indonesia Office Complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday. Meutya stated that the effort to eradicate online gambling cannot be separated from the active role of the public, who have reported 156,000 accounts suspected of being used in online gambling activities through the cekrekening.id portal. Meutya emphasised that the government’s handling of online gambling activities requires collaboration involving various parties, such as Kemkomdigi, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and the banking industry. This collaborative effort is carried out from the initial stage, starting from content detection to access termination. “Starting from detection, shifting from reactive takedowns to pattern-based anomaly detection. Then, rapid data supply, the importance of data integration, accelerating the transfer of cekrekening.id data to the mobile identity authority,” she said. In addition to terminating access to online gambling content, Kemkomdigi has reported around 38,000 accounts suspected of being linked to online gambling activities to the OJK. “We reported 38,000 accounts to the OJK. From this figure, 38,000 we reported, then closures were carried out by the OJK. Closing this many account numbers is certainly not easy. I am sure this has also been assisted by our friends in banking, but we want more than this number,” Meutya said.
