Minister wants to tackle porn

JAKARTA: State Minister of Women's Empowerment Sri Redjeki Sumaryoto said the country was in urgent need of a law to fight against pornography and the trafficking of women and children.

"We do need a sole law to fight against the rampant pornography, and the trade in women because the criminal code is ineffective in reducing these crimes," she said in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, on Friday.

She said penalties should be increased for those found guilty of trafficking pornographic products, women and children.

She alleged the police and military in rural areas were indirectly involved in people trafficking when they issued fake documents.

"Many child laborers have been sent abroad because government apparatus in their towns of origin issue documents with fake ages," she said. -- Antara
