Minister urges parents to engage children in positive activities during home learning period
Jakarta (ANTARA) — Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti has urged parents to engage their children in positive activities during the independent home-learning period over Ramadan.
"Parents should guide and give attention during out-of-school learning in the month of Ramadan. Encourage children to learn through various socio-religious activities as part of character education. Positive activities can reduce non-educational device usage," Abdul Mu'ti said when contacted in Jakarta on Thursday.
Through a Joint Ministerial Circular on Learning During Ramadan 1447 H/2026 M, the government has asked parents to implement policies on gadget and internet use by students during the independent home-learning period.
The circular, signed jointly by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, the Minister of Religious Affairs, and the Minister of Home Affairs, serves as a guideline for regional governments, educational institutions, and parents in organising education from the start of Ramadan through to after Eid al-Fitr.
During this year's Ramadan period, students will study from home with parental supervision from 18 to 21 February 2026, the ministry explained.
The circular also sets out government policy on device usage and internet access, requiring parents to impose limits on students during independent study at home.
"Parents may set reasonable screen time limits that are agreed upon together with the child," the circular states.
Furthermore, through the same circular, the government has asked parents to supervise children when accessing the internet and social media, including directing them towards beneficial content.
The circular also encourages parents to foster positive activities by strengthening literacy, numeracy, and character development, such as worship and religious study, reading books or other materials together with children, games that train logic, teamwork and creativity, as well as arts, sports, and cultural activities suited to children's interests.
