Minister urges all parties to protect Bromo after fire
Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana has urged all parties to protect the sustainability of the Mount Bromo area in East Java following a recent fire.
“Bromo is once again welcoming tourists, but we all have a responsibility to look after it. Enjoying Bromo means helping to protect Bromo. We must not let our negligence damage the very nature that brings millions of people to admire this area,” Widiyanti said in an official statement confirmed in Jakarta on Sunday.
Widiyanti stressed that the reopening of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) does not mean vigilance can be relaxed, especially as Indonesia is still facing the dry season and the potential for forest and land fires still needs to be anticipated.
Tourists are asked to comply with all regulations and instructions from officers on the ground, maintain the cleanliness and preservation of the area, and refrain from activities that could potentially cause fires, such as lighting campfires or discarding cigarette butts and other objects that could become a source of ignition.
“Tourism recovery must go hand in hand with environmental recovery. We want tourism activities and the local economy to move again, but nature must also remain protected. This is the spirit of quality and sustainable tourism that we continue to promote,” Widiyanti said.
On the occasion, Widiyanti also welcomed the reopening of the Mount Bromo tourist area. Mount Bromo was reopened for tourist visits on Thursday, 20 August 2026 at 00.01 WIB, based on the results of monitoring and evaluation of the area’s condition after the fire by the TNBTS Centre.
The daily visitor quota for the Bromo area remains set at 2,752 tourists per day. Tourists are also advised to book tickets through official channels and always pay attention to the latest information issued by the TNBTS Centre.
The reopening means restoring tourism activities and the local economy in the surrounding area, from jeep drivers and tour guides to local small and medium enterprises.
She confirmed that the Ministry of Tourism continues to coordinate with local governments and tourism stakeholders to support the recovery of tourism activities and ensure tourists receive clear information about the condition of destinations.
