Malang, East Java – Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono has pledged to promptly address three problems faced by fishermen at Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP), Desa Pujiharjo, Tirtoyudo Sub-district, Malang Regency, East Java.

During a dialogue with fishermen at KNMP Pujiharjo on Wednesday, he identified three issues: the availability of a fuel filling station (SPBN) facility, sedimentation, and strengthened road access.

‘I first came here (KNMP Pujiharjo Village) six months ago and now it’s ready. Hopefully, within six months the three issues above could be realised,’ Trenggono said.

The three issues were raised during the dialogue with fishermen.

During the session, one fisherman said they currently have to buy boat fuel in Dampit, Malang Regency, a two-hour journey from Pujiharjo.

Considering the situation, Trenggono said he would realise the proposal by equipping KNMP Desa Pujiharjo with SPBN facilities.

Regarding sedimentation, he asked the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries to dredge to improve the flow of vessels to the mooring area at KNMP Pujiharjo.

‘Terus for the roads, I have asked the Regent and we will assist to the Minister of Public Works,’ he said.

Currently, the area has several major infrastructures ready for operation, such as a portable ice plant for fish, supply kiosks, managing office, fishing landing shelter, vessel docking, and fishermen’s workshop.

Meanwhile, Malang Regency Fisheries Department head Victor Sembiring explained that the number of fishermen’s boats in Pujiharjo village by 2026 will total 300 units.

In the fishing season, each fishing boat on average needs fuel up to 40 litres per day.

‘That means about 12,000 litres per day must be supplied. If a SPBN tanker has a capacity of eight thousand litres, that would be enough for one day during the fishing season,’ he said.

Meanwhile, he said dredging sedimentation will not only ease access from sea to the mooring area but also minimise boat damage.

‘Because boats are no longer moored on sand as before, the condition is much more durable when moored in water,’ he added.
