Minister Trenggono: Fishery Protein Remains Secure Amid Geopolitical Turbulence
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono has assured that the national supply of fishery protein remains secure amid global geopolitical turbulence and climate change affecting the world’s food sector. “In facing the impacts of geopolitical dynamics and climate phenomena, the KKP remains fully committed to ensuring that the needs and availability of animal protein for the public, particularly from the fisheries sector, can be met effectively,” Trenggono stated during a working meeting with the DPR RI’s Commission IV in Jakarta on Tuesday. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining the availability of animal protein from the fisheries sector amid global geopolitical dynamics and climate change. He conveyed that the marine and fisheries sector continues to serve as one of the main pillars in supporting national food security, particularly in sustainably meeting the protein needs of the Indonesian people. Based on the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries’ analysis, national fish production from April to December 2026 is projected to reach a total of 10.57 million tonnes. “This figure consists of contributions from capture fisheries production of 5.42 million tonnes and aquaculture production of 5.15 million tonnes,” Trenggono said. He explained that his side will continue to closely monitor developments in major fishery commodities, particularly in eight major cities that are consumption hubs for the public. However, he did not specify those eight regions. Monitoring is conducted to ensure that fish availability remains maintained and distribution runs smoothly, so that the public’s animal protein needs can be met evenly across various regions. “Based on monitoring results, we can report that the status of fish availability is in the safe category until June 2026,” he stated. He added that efforts to strengthen food security in the marine and fisheries sector require support from various parties to run optimally and sustainably. For this reason, the KKP hopes for synergy and input from the DPR RI’s Commission IV to strengthen policies and programmes supporting increased national fisheries production and distribution.
