Minister stresses importance of connectivity at Tanjung Kelayang SEZ

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana has emphasised the importance of strong air connectivity around the Tanjung Kelayang Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Belitung. “This SEZ is not only a gateway for investment, but also a showcase for Belitung tourism that prioritises sustainable development, cultural preservation, marine tourism, geotourism, culinary experiences, and the strengthening of local MSMEs,” Widiyanti said in an official statement confirmed in Jakarta on Monday. Widiyanti stated that connectivity is one of the keys to enabling Belitung to enhance its competitiveness as a world-class tourist destination. The presence of Scoot flights connecting Singapore and Belitung marks an important momentum to strengthen international accessibility to Belitung, particularly the Tanjung Kelayang SEZ. Daniel Alexander Napitupulu, Director of PT Belitung Pantai Intan and manager of the Tanjung Kelayang SEZ, conveyed that the SEZ, known as Tanjung Kelayang Reserve, continues to strengthen its position as a premium tourism destination based on conservation and low-carbon development on Belitung Island. Daniel revealed a number of recent investment developments in the 324.4-hectare area. Business operators within the zone continue to add to their investment portfolios while adhering to the principles of sustainable development. In terms of recreational facilities, the Tanjung Kelayang SEZ has introduced a pickleball court that has received a positive response from tourists. Seeing the high level of interest, the management plans to add sports facilities including one tennis court, one pickleball court, and one padel court. The area will also feature a fitness centre located in the village within the zone as part of diversifying the visitor experience. A vessel is not merely used as a means of transport but is designed to enrich the tourist experience, including through activities such as dinner on board and sunset cruises. Of the total 324.4-hectare area of the Tanjung Kelayang SEZ, approximately half is allocated as a conservation area. The management of the conservation area is assisted by a resident biologist and includes routine conservation activities. This area serves as a habitat for various types of biodiversity, including pangolins, tarsiers, mouse-deer, endemic dragonflies, and white-bellied sea eagles. “This area also does not use groundwater and relies entirely on rainwater harvesting. This is an anticipatory measure against the risk of land subsidence due to excessive groundwater exploitation, as has occurred in several coastal areas of Java Island,” Daniel revealed.
