Minister: Schools Heavily Affected by Anak Krakatau Eruption May Implement Distance Learning

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti has said that schools heavily affected by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau may adjust learning arrangements for their pupils. Schools severely impacted by the eruption may implement distance learning (PJJ), such as in Banten and Lampung.

“In areas affected by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, learning adjustments can be made with reference to the air pollution standard index values in the affected areas. Regarding learning activities in areas that are quite heavily affected, several have been reported in Banten, particularly in Serang Regency. For Lampung, these are in Tanggamus, Bandar Lampung, and South Lampung,” Mu’ti said during an online press conference on the Bakom YouTube account on Sunday (6/9/2026).

Mu’ti reminded that the safety of the school community, pupils, and teachers is the top priority. Therefore, areas heavily affected by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau may adjust learning activities starting Monday (7/9).

“In areas that are quite heavily affected, learning may be carried out through home-based learning online or at certain safe locations using online learning facilities or PJJ,” Mu’ti said.

“For areas not directly affected, learning may continue at school while adhering to health protocols such as wearing masks, not conducting activities outside the classroom, closing doors and windows, and other measures that ensure the safety of all pupils. The duration and hours of learning may be adjusted,” he stressed.

Additionally, Mu’ti said that learning hours and activities may be adjusted according to current conditions. Mu’ti encouraged that pupils be given material related to the importance of maintaining health and personal safety.

“Learning hours may be adjusted according to the situation and conditions, and do not have to be carried out in full according to the normal learning schedule. Furthermore, in addition to the scheduled learning material, pupils may also be given material about the importance of maintaining their safety, the importance of always remaining calm and maintaining their health, as well as continuing to follow information and policies from the relevant authorities. I think that is broadly what we can convey,” he added.
