Minister says TikTok-Tokopedia undertaking internal restructuring, not layoffs

Jakarta - Manpower Minister Yassierli has stated that technology and platform company TikTok-Tokopedia Group is not carrying out layoffs, but rather an internal human resources restructuring. “The President Director of (TikTok) Tokopedia has clarified that what is currently happening is not layoffs, in the sense of unilateral dismissals due to industry conditions, but rather they are undertaking an internal reorganisation, termed talent mobility,” Minister Yassierli said after a working meeting with House of Representatives Commission IX at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday. He noted that the company is also currently opening new job vacancies for approximately 100 people. “TikTok itself is opening new job vacancies for around 100 people. So that is now clear,” the Minister stated. Separately, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said his office had summoned company representatives, both from Indonesia and China. According to Sufmi Dasco, the issue of layoffs affecting more than 1,200 workers is not true. Following a meeting with the company and the Manpower Ministry, it was recorded that around 200 people had taken compensation as part of the reorganisation. However, he did not yet know the exact number of workers affected by the company’s internal dynamics. President Director of PT Tokopedia Stephanie Susilo denied there had been mass layoffs of workers in Indonesia. In the restructuring process, she said, a number of workers had chosen to take a compensation package and work elsewhere. Additionally, Stephanie said, some workers were being channelled to other companies under the TikTok-Tokopedia business group umbrella. “We are also currently recruiting for more than 100 positions in Indonesia,” Stephanie said.
