Minister Reveals Fishermen's Villages Can Produce 2.8 Million Tonnes

The government, through the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), is continuing to strengthen the national fisheries and marine sector via the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP) development programme. The fishery ecosystem within KNMP will be integrated from upstream to downstream to provide added value. Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated that the KNMP programme is not only aimed at increasing fishery production but also at improving fish quality and adding economic value for coastal communities. According to government predictions, the 1,369 fishermen’s villages slated for completion by the end of 2026 will be capable of producing approximately 2.8 million tonnes of fishery products. ‘If the President asks me to build up to 5,000 locations by the end of 2029, just from these 1,300 alone, it is estimated at 2.8 million tonnes,’ Trenggono said during CNBC Indonesia’s Economic Update 2026. One strategy to boost productivity is optimising the use of modern storage technology, such as slurry ice, which can preserve fish freshness for several days. ‘So when they go to sea, they have slurry ice that can last up to three days, and the quality is very good. The fish remains fresh,’ he explained. Looking ahead, Trenggono hopes the presence of village managers will ensure all facilities are well managed to support fishermen’s activities. The government also plans to install mini processing facilities in the fishermen’s villages, enabling the catch to be immediately vacuum-packed and processed. Through the KNMP, the government also intends to develop fast food fishery products as part of strengthening the supply chain from upstream to downstream, improving traceability and ensuring the catch is fresher than currently available.
