Minister: Ratification of RI-Turkiye-Malaysia Defence Cooperation Strengthens Legal Basis
Several fundamental points underpin the ratification of the two agreements, including the principles of equality and mutual benefit. The cooperation also encompasses capacity building, information exchange and the strengthening of the defence industry.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas has stated that the ratification of the bills on defence cooperation between Indonesia and Turkiye, and Indonesia and Malaysia, strengthens the legal basis for implementing the two countries’ strategic cooperation.
Speaking to reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday, Supratman said that defence cooperation between Indonesia and Turkiye and Malaysia has thus far been conducted on the basis of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit.
“Several fundamental points underpinning the ratification of these two agreements relate to the principles of equality and mutual benefit. The cooperation also covers capacity building, information exchange and the strengthening of the domestic defence industry,” he said.
According to Supratman, the ratification of the two agreements fulfils the mandate of Article 10 letter (a) of Law Number 24 of 2000 on International Treaties.
That provision stipulates that treaties relating to politics, peace, defence and state security must be ratified by law, as also provided for under Law Number 12 of 2011 as amended by Law Number 13 of 2022.
The government, together with the House of Representatives (DPR RI), ratified the two bills at a plenary session on Tuesday (21/7).
Supratman expressed his appreciation to the leadership and members of the DPR RI for their support and for concluding deliberations on the two bills.
Previously, Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the DPR RI, Anton Sukartono Suratto, said that all eight factions in Commission I, together with the government, had agreed on the two bills at the first stage of deliberations.
“Commission I of the DPR RI consistently emphasises the importance of carrying out its oversight and budgetary functions consistently. In addition, the ratification of these laws requires budgetary support that is measurable, appropriately targeted and sustainable,” Anton said.
Speaker of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, subsequently sought the approval of all factions at the plenary session. All factions expressed their agreement, so the two bills were officially ratified into law.
With the ratification, Indonesia’s defence cooperation with Turkiye and Malaysia now enjoys stronger legal certainty to support the implementation of various strategic programmes in the defence sector.
