Minister pushes human resource development to make Indonesia global maritime hub

The Ocean Institute of Indonesia is expected to become a hub for producing human resources and a centre for research and innovation in Indonesia’s marine sector.

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, has stressed that strengthening human resources is the key to realising Indonesia as a global maritime axis. He praised the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries’ initiative to establish the Ocean Institute of Indonesia as a platform for strengthening vocational higher education in marine and fisheries, while expanding collaboration with universities and various stakeholders.

“The Ocean Institute of Indonesia is hoped to become a hub for producing human resources and a centre for research and innovation in the marine sector in Indonesia,” the minister said.

“The ocean is a treasure that must be unearthed by people with knowledge. The Ocean Institute of Indonesia will become one of the backbones for the birth of innovations and great works in the marine sector,” he added.

The minister also expressed hope that the institute would create centres of excellence focusing on priority areas and encourage the emergence of technology-based marine start-ups.

Meanwhile, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated that the formation of the Ocean Institute of Indonesia is part of the transformation of vocational higher education within his ministry. He noted that this institutional strengthening must be accompanied by partnerships with universities that have strong academic and scientific capacity.

“Besides being experts in their fields, they must also possess vocational expertise. Therefore, I have requested cooperation with universities of the best reputation. This has been signed today with the Bandung Institute of Technology, the Bogor Agricultural Institute, Diponegoro University, and others,” the minister said.
