Minister: Public Participation in Choosing 81st Independence Day Logo Embodies Gotong Royong
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that public participation in choosing the logo for the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia embodies the spirit of democracy, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and a sense of ownership towards national symbols. Prasetyo, who also serves as Chair of the National Committee for the 81st Indonesian Independence Day Commemoration, emphasised that through this participation, the public are not just spectators of the final result but active contributors in determining the visual identity representing the spirit of the commemoration.
“The selection of the logo for the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia provides a space for the public to take part in the independence celebrations. This involvement reflects the spirit of democracy, gotong royong, and a sense of ownership towards our national symbols,” Prasetyo said in a written statement in Jakarta on Thursday. He noted that every vote and piece of input from the community is an important part of choosing the design deemed most capable of depicting Indonesia’s aspirations, optimism, and spirit of unity.
“The commemoration of the Republic of Indonesia’s Anniversary belongs to all Indonesian people. Therefore, we are involving various elements of society, from students and creative communities to the general public, so that this logo selection process becomes a space for national collaboration that strengthens our sense of nationhood and love for the homeland,” he added. Prasetyo expressed hope that the chosen logo would not only serve as a visual identity but also as a symbol of unity and a reminder that independence was built, fought for, and is safeguarded by all Indonesian people.
“Through this spirit of togetherness, we want to ensure that every independence commemoration is not just about remembering history, but also about strengthening our collective resolve to continue the struggle towards a more advanced, just, and prosperous Indonesia,” he said. To facilitate this, the government launched an official website for the 81st Independence Day logo, providing a channel for the public to vote for one of five logo options that have undergone a selection and curation process by the Ministry of Creative Economy and the Indonesian Graphic Design Association (ADGI).
Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky Harsya explained that the process differed from previous years. “Usually, the top five are narrowed down to three, and then the President chooses. But this time, thank God, the President wanted the public to choose from the five options. So, this is a good thing that involves public participation in the logo selection,” he said during a press conference at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Wednesday (24/6).
