Minister Pigai: Respect Court Ruling in Andrie Yunus Case

Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai has stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law regarding the verdict handed down by the Jakarta II-08 Military Court in the case of the assault on KontraS Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus. Pigai stated that all citizens, without exception, must respect court rulings that have permanent legal force. This statement responds to the conviction of four Indonesian Military soldiers proven to have carried out an acid attack on the activist. “As good citizens, the court has ruled and the law regulates it, so everyone must obey the law obediently,” Pigai said at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday (17/6/2026). He added that a legal ruling should not be confronted subjectively. “It has been sentenced, right? If it has been sentenced, we as citizens cannot oppose the court’s decision,” he asserted. During the trial at the Jakarta II-08 Military Court, the panel of judges chaired by Colonel of the Legal Corps Fredy Ferdian Isnartanto handed down varying sentences to the defendants, who were found legally and convincingly guilty of premeditated grievous bodily harm. The panel assessed that Sergeant Edi and First Lieutenant Budhi were the masterminds behind the heinous act. The motive for the attack was identified as an attempt to teach a lesson and create a deterrent effect to prevent Andrie Yunus from criticising the Indonesian Military institution.
