Minister Pigai on Andrie Yunus Case: Legal Process Underway, Do Not Doubt Us
Jakarta, VIVA – Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai stated that the legal process related to the acid attack on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), is currently underway. Pigai also asked the public not to doubt the government’s commitment to enforcing the law in this case. This was conveyed by Pigai during a working meeting with Commission XIII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, 7 April 2026. Pigai explained that from the outset, the government has given full attention to the case affecting Andrie Yunus. “This is the first time in the history of the Republic of Indonesia, a case faced by an activist has received immediate attention from the Republic of Indonesia government. The Human Rights Minister, the DPR, parties, even the ruling parties in power. The President himself has conveyed the same thing,” said Pigai. Nevertheless, Pigai emphasised that the government cannot direct the ongoing legal process. “We cannot; the government cannot direct the legal process in any direction. We cannot be led to determine the punishment of someone in the context of the judiciary, because a true state must not intervene in the judicial process,” he stated. He then urged the public not to judge the ongoing legal process through mass pressure or the media. On the other hand, Pigai also asked the public not to doubt the government’s commitment to upholding justice, especially regarding the Andrie Yunus case. “Do not doubt the Ministry of Human Rights, the government, regarding any injustice faced by anyone in the Republic of Indonesia. Whether you are a ruling party or opposition, it doesn’t matter to us,” said Pigai. “For us, it is any Indonesian citizen. We must protect the entire nation, advance the nation’s life, and prosper the people, educate the nation’s life. That is our foundation that we hold. We hold that to protect the entire homeland. Therefore, do not doubt us,” he concluded.
