Minister of Religion and Maluku Governor Attend Peak Chinese New Year Celebration at Jakarta Cathedral
The Festival Parade for the Peak Chinese New Year 2026 Celebration was held from Jakarta Cathedral to Lapangan Banteng on Saturday afternoon. The parade was attended by Minister of Religion (Menag) Nasaruddin Umar and Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda.
According to observations at the location on Saturday, 28 February 2026, at 16:23 WIB, the gathering point for the peak Chinese New Year 2026 parade was held in front of Jakarta Cathedral. In addition to Nasaruddin and Sherly, Vice Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology Stella Christie also attended.
The Chinese New Year Nusantara parade series opened with gong strikes from representatives of three pillars. The three representatives were a priest from the Cathedral, Nasaruddin from Istiqlal Mosque, and Sherly representing the regions.
Parade participants carried posters inscribed with “Nusantara Chinese New Year Harmony”. They wore clothing and costumes in shades of red and yellow.
A line of police officers on horseback participated in the parade. There were also lion dances, dragon lanterns, marching bands, ondel-ondel traditional dolls, kuda lumping traditional horse dance, Jakarta 2025 traditional dancers (koko cici), and other performances.
Additionally, participants were dressed as characters from the Kera Sakti film “Sunggokong” (Monkey King). The parade featured 468 people in total.
To Be Attended by Gibran
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka was scheduled to attend the event. This was stated by the Head of Operations of the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Unit, Kompol Robby Hefados.
“The planned attendee is the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia,” said Kompol Robby Hefados to reporters on Saturday (28/2).
Robby stated that six parking areas capable of accommodating 1,000 vehicles had been prepared for the event. He said participants of the National Chinese New Year celebration would conduct a parade procession starting from in front of the Cathedral.
“And it should also be informed that this afternoon there will be a procession by the community or participants of the National Chinese New Year celebration, starting from in front of the Cathedral heading towards the Adipura Monument, then turning right towards the Ministry building,” said Robby.
“And continuing to the Post Office, then from the Post Office to Jalan Lapangan Banteng Utara, then turning left to the Western Lapangan Banteng entrance,” he added.
