Minister of Public Works Claims Infrastructure Programme to Absorb 1 Million Jobs
Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo has claimed that the community-based infrastructure development programme in 2026 will absorb up to one million workers. According to him, this programme is the government’s key initiative to maintain purchasing power while boosting local economies amid global pressures.
“This programme has multiplier effects. It not only builds infrastructure but also stimulates community economies,” Dody stated during a working meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, 7 April 2026.
Dody explained that the community-based infrastructure programme this year covers 15,364 locations across Indonesia. Additionally, he said, the government is increasing the budget allocation for this programme from Rp4.84 trillion to Rp5.48 trillion.
According to Dody, the labour-intensive programme is a crucial strategy to ensure that the benefits of development are directly felt by the community. Besides producing infrastructure, this scheme also provides direct income for residents involved.
The majority of infrastructure development is focused on the water resources sector. The Accelerated Improvement of Irrigation Water Management Programme (P3TGAI) is the largest contributor, implemented in around 12,000 locations with a budget of approximately Rp2.7 trillion.
In the connectivity sector, the Ministry of Public Works targets the construction of 118 hanging bridges through the labour-intensive scheme. This project is expected to open access to remote areas while facilitating community economic activities.
Meanwhile, in the settlements sector, the community-based infrastructure programme includes various activities aimed at improving residents’ quality of life. These include the development of regional socio-economic infrastructure (PISEW), community-based drinking water and sanitation provision (Pamsimas), and environmental sanitation and waste management programmes.
