Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Targets Construction of 5,000 Fishing Villages Across Indonesia

The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, has set a target to develop 5,000 Red and White Fishing Villages (KNMP) throughout Indonesia. The construction of these thousands of fishing villages is intended to be completed by the end of the first term of the Prabowo Subianto administration.

Trenggano announced the target while accompanying the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, during an inspection of the Warloka Pesisir Fishing Village in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Thursday afternoon. He revealed that 100 fishing villages have been built so far, with a target of 1,369 villages for this year and 1,000 more next year.

Coordinating Minister Zulkifli Hasan stated that the development of these villages aims to empower fishermen to achieve fish self-sufficiency. He emphasised the importance of food sovereignty for both carbohydrates and proteins, noting that reducing reliance on imports is vital for the prosperity of Indonesian farmers, fishermen, and breeders.

During the inspection, the delegation reviewed various facilities in Labuan Bajo, including portable cold storage, fish auction sites, fisherman workshops, and supply kiosks. Zulkifli Hasan noted that the cold storage in Warloka Pesisir can hold up to 10 tonnes of fish, allowing them to be preserved for several months.

Furthermore, Zulkifli highlighted a significant shrimp farming project in East Sumba, NTT, which covers 2,150 hectares and is projected to produce 52,800 tonnes of shrimp per year. He expressed optimism that Indonesia could become the world’s largest exporter of shrimp, fish, and other protein sources.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries began constructing the Integrated Shrimp Farming (ISF) area in Waingapu in February 2026 to drive regional economic growth. This integrated area includes upstream and downstream infrastructure, such as seawater intake, main reservoirs, cultivation ponds, wastewater treatment plants (IPAL), and various machinery. The total investment allocated for this project is US$500 million, equivalent to approximately Rp 7.2 trillion.
