Minister of Immigration and Corrections Inspects Renovated Homes in Sukabumi Built by Prisoners in 19 Days

Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto conducted a direct inspection of a social housing renovation programme in the Warungkiara area of Sukabumi, West Java. The houses were constructed using materials produced by inmates at Tangerang Prison, with construction work involving prisoners from Warungkiara Prison.

Agus Andrianto arrived around 10.20 Western Indonesia Time and immediately inspected two completed homes. He reviewed the interiors, including the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living room, noting that the houses had been furnished with items such as living room furniture, mattresses, and wardrobes.

“Prison Warden, this construction involved inmates. Do they receive a premium?” Agus asked during the inspection. “Yes, they do, sir,” replied Warungkiara Prison Warden Panji Pamekas.

Agus explained that the home renovation programme was financed using funds from a large harvest at Cirebon Prison on 15 January. Officers then identified houses that were unfit for habitation to be repaired. “I told the Director General, if there are community members needing clean water from these harvest proceeds, please arrange it,” he added.

He noted that the construction period was remarkably short, especially since the beneficiaries already owned their land. “Within 19 days, five house units were completed. This demonstrates the speed of work and the use of relatively affordable materials, enabling the creation of decent housing for the community, amen,” he remarked.
