The Ministry of Housing and Residential Areas (PKP) has increased the allocation for the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) programme in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) by more than 28-fold compared to previous figures. Minister of PKP, Maruarar Sirait (Ara), stated that the BSPS allocation in DIY has risen to reach 2,856 housing units this year. He added that this figure has the potential to increase to 3,000 houses due to the high number of uninhabitable homes remaining in the region.

“This is also thanks to the efforts of Titiek Suharto, which resulted in 2,856 houses this year, but because there are still many uninhabitable homes, it will become 3,000 for Yogyakarta this year,” said Ara during a visit to a BSPS recipient’s house in Srimulyo, Piyungan, Bantul, on Thursday. Consequently, the BSPS allocation has seen a drastic increase from the initial 105 units to 2,856, with a further target of 3,000 units.

According to the presented data, the BSPS distribution in DIY spans four regencies and one city: Kulon Progo (200 units), Sleman (337 units), Yogyakarta City (1,616 units), Bantul (422 units), and Gunungkidul (281 units).

Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Siti Hediati Hariyadi (Titiek Suharto), who also attended the visit in Bantul, noted that she has received many complaints from rural communities regarding uninhabitable housing. “I have seen for myself where roofs leak during rain, walls made of woven bamboo or bricks are about to collapse, and floors are made of damp earth,” said Titiek. She emphasised that the BSPS programme is vital for helping residents repair their homes to a habitable standard.

She explained that through this programme, the government provides an allocation of Rp20 million to beneficiaries, while the remainder is funded through community self-help, fostering a spirit of ‘gotong royong’ (mutual cooperation). Last year, the national allocation for the house renovation programme realised 45,000 units; this year, the allocation has increased to 400,000 units. The budget has also risen from Rp5 trillion to Rp10 trillion, with 82 per cent of this budget dedicated to the house renovation programme.
