Bandarlampung (ANTARA) - Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait stated that the government’s plan to extend the mortgage tenor to 40 years will ease instalments for the public. “The President has instructed to extend from 30 years to 40 years for mortgages, and we will certainly implement and adjust the regulations accordingly,” said Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait in Bandarlampung on Thursday. He explained that extending the home ownership credit period to 40 years can lighten the instalments for the public. “This will certainly ease the instalments. For 40 years, like the current subsidised landed housing, if it’s 10 years the instalment is around Rp1.7 million, 15 years Rp1.4 million. If 20 years, perhaps Rp1.1 million, and if 40 years it could be even cheaper, around Rp800-900 thousand,” he said. He continued that for the subsequent regulations, the government is coordinating with relevant parties to support the plan to extend the mortgage period to 40 years. “The regulations will be prepared soon; we will create the formula for 40-year mortgages. And communication is needed with developers, consumers, banking—all ecosystems must coordinate so that the rules can be implemented,” he added. According to him, besides easing instalments, extending the mortgage tenor to 40 years can also broaden the property market. “This is a form of government support for its people,” he said.
