The Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, has emphasised that the assessment process for the 2026 Outstanding Regional Government Awards will be conducted objectively. The process relies fully on quantitative data and measurable performance indicators that are monitored periodically.

This measure has been implemented to ensure transparency and fairness for all competing regions. The performance evaluation covers sectors such as poverty alleviation, stunting reduction, creative financing, inflation control, and the reduction of open unemployment rates. “I am closely supervising the assessment team. I declare that this represents the credibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs,” he stated in a written statement on Friday.

Tito explained that the data used is quantitative, open, and accountable. The indicators employed are key issues currently prioritised by the government, such as poverty, unemployment, stunting, and inflation; specifically for inflation, data is monitored and updated weekly. The Ministry of Home Affairs has divided the awards into six regions: Sumatra, Kalimantan, Maluku-Nusa Tenggara, Java-Bali, Sulawesi, and Papua. This regional scheme is applied to ensure the competition remains proportional and provides equal opportunity for regions according to their respective capacities.

In addition to attending the awards ceremony, Tito attended several other strategic agendas in Yogyakarta, including activities related to the national housing programme and the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) meeting for the Java-Bali region. “The housing issue is directly linked to poverty, unemployment, and extreme poverty. The root of the problem lies primarily in housing. Furthermore, the Forkopimda meeting led by the Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs is essential for maintaining political and security stability,” he explained.

Tito noted that the series of regional government awards will continue, with the Papua regional schedule to be announced soon. The programme is expected to encourage regions to continue innovating and delivering tangible impacts to the community. He also emphasised that this programme serves as a message to the public that many regional heads continue to perform well, despite the scrutiny surrounding several legal cases involving local officials. “This event also serves to send a message to the public that, despite some regional heads facing legal issues, there are many regional heads who care for their people—achieving excellence in handling poverty, unemployment, and inflation,” he concluded.
