Minister of Hajj and Umrah to Hajj Officials: This is a Sacred Mission, Avoid Rude Remarks and Vulgar Jokes
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah (Menhaj), Mochamad Irfan Yusuf (Gus Irfan), delivered a message during the send-off of 200 Hajj Service Officials (PPIH) for the Saudi Arabia Mecca Regional Office (Daker) at the Pondok Gede Hajj Hostel in East Jakarta on Thursday (23/4/2026). Gus Irfan reminded them that serving as Hajj officials, wherever assigned, is not a privilege for indulgence but a trust from the state that must be carried out with full responsibility. Hajj officials, particularly those placed in the holy city of Mecca, bear the greatest and most demanding task because that city is the gathering point for pilgrims from around the world. Hajj officials are strictly prohibited from speaking rudely to pilgrims. The Menhaj warned against causing emotional harm to pilgrims. “Avoid rude remarks, raised tones, dismissive attitudes, or actions that cause emotional wounds to pilgrims,” said Gus Irfan at the Pondok Gede Hajj Hostel on Thursday. He explained that some pilgrims may hesitate to voice their complaints for fear of causing trouble. Therefore, Hajj officials must take the initiative to approach pilgrims who often feel anxious or confused upon arriving in the Holy Land. “Most importantly, we ourselves, the officials, must know what and how to handle the diverse array of pilgrims,” he stated. Hajj officials must maintain integrity throughout their duties, rather than misusing the authority granted for personal interests. “Uphold integrity in every aspect of your duties. Do not abuse authority, do not seek personal gain, do not take shortcuts that violate the rules,” said Gus Irfan.
