Minister of Environment Encourages Wonosobo to Develop Carbon Economic Potential

Environment Minister/Head of the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) Moh Jumhur Hidayat stated that carbon trading in Wonosobo could provide economic benefits for the community. “There is carbon trading with enormous value. Carbon trading is the same as trading oxygen. That is, the oxygen produced from tree planting activities can be compensated with monetary value,” Jumhur said during a working visit to Wonosobo Regency, Central Java, on Sunday (9/8/2026). Jumhur affirmed that the Ministry of Environment is committed to ensuring carbon trading runs transparently so that its economic benefits can be felt by the community. This effort aligns with the steps taken by Wonosobo Regent Afif Nurhidayat, who has mobilised the community to plant hundreds of thousands of coffee trees on the slopes of Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing. The planting is intended to maintain ecosystem balance while increasing land productivity. Beyond carbon trading, Jumhur sees Wonosobo’s economic potential in the environment-based tourism sector. During the visit, he witnessed a Hot Air Balloon Festival, which he considered to have tourist appeal for both local and international visitors. “I am thinking and earlier had discussions with the Wonosobo Regent and Wonosobo figures about eco-tourism, namely tourism related to environmental enhancement,” Jumhur said. According to the Ministry of Environment, developing tourism based on natural beauty and conservation can become a regional advantage while improving the welfare of surrounding communities. Developing this potential requires synergy between the central and regional governments so that economic activities can proceed without sacrificing environmental sustainability.
