Minister of Environment and Sri Sultan Discuss Development That Does Not Neglect the Environment
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Environment Moh Jumhur Hidayat, in a meeting with the Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, discussed the importance of development that does not neglect environmental sustainability but instead honours the Earth.
According to a statement received in Jakarta on Friday, the Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Jumhur, in his meeting with Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X at the Kepatihan in Yogyakarta on Friday (24/7), discussed local wisdom which emphasises that development must not disregard environmental preservation.
He conveyed that this Yogyakartan philosophy of leadership and local wisdom aligns closely with the strategic vision of the Ministry of Environment (KLH)/BPLH: that national development today must no longer be oriented solely towards economic growth figures, but must also ensure ecological sustainability and a continuous improvement in the quality of life of the people.
More deeply, he said, development must be able to maintain a harmonious relationship between people and between people and nature.
Minister Jumhur delivered a similar message when serving as keynote speaker at the IV Congress of the Indonesian Social Development Association (APSI), held at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta, where he affirmed that every development plan today must incorporate integrated indicators of social and ecological resilience.
“Currently, the environmental aspect of Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal) is already good, but it needs improvement in terms of integration and social preparation. That must be considered,” said Minister Jumhur.
He also highlighted the importance of social justice in every large-scale investment.
Economic growth driven by corporations or industry must have a direct impact on improving the welfare of residents around operational areas, through job creation, knowledge transfer, and the active involvement of communities in local economic supply chains.
