Minister of Culture Lauds Rahmah El Yunusiyyah as Role Model for Society
Jakarta — Indonesia’s Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has lauded the pioneering efforts of West Sumatran national hero Rahmah El Yunusiyyah as an important role model for society, particularly for Indonesian women, emphasising her founding of Perguruan Diniyyah Puteri, an Islamic educational institution.
The educational institution has not only produced teachers, but has also shaped the character of women with Islamic values, preparing capable mothers and educators for families and communities, and fostering social responsibility for the welfare of others based on devotion to Allah.
“At a very young age, she took the initiative to establish a school that has grown considerably since then, producing teachers who have been distributed throughout the Indonesian archipelago,” explained Minister Fadli when confirmed from Jakarta on Saturday.
The Minister noted that several prominent figures who have served at national and international levels graduated from Diniyyah Puteri, including Rasuna Said, who was also awarded the title of national hero.
Furthermore, the Minister emphasised the significance of the museum, which occupies Rahmah El Yunusiyyah’s original residence, designated as a national monument by President Prabowo Subianto in 2025, stating it holds considerable historical value and should continue to be introduced to younger generations.
He advocated for efforts to designate the museum as a National Cultural Heritage site so that the historical value and exemplary legacy of Rahmah El Yunusiyyah can be passed on to future generations.
Not far from the museum location, the historical trail continued with a visit to Rahmah El Yunusiyyah’s grave and a direct inspection of the Perguruan Diniyyah Puteri dormitory.
The 2.5-hectare dormitory is equipped with various educational facilities supporting students’ learning activities.
This visit is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve the historical heritage of the national figure whilst fostering awareness among younger generations to emulate Rahmah El Yunusiyyah’s spirit of struggle in advancing education and women’s empowerment in Indonesia.
